Jurassic World Lessons: Dominion Can Learn From Godzilla

The upcoming sequel to the classic dinosaur adventure might learn a thing or two from another series based on a giant destructive reptile.

When it comes to movies about giant monsters and the disasters they create, it can be difficult to manage realistic characters. It's a pity, but the worst part of monster movies is almost always the humans going through major events. Jurassic Park: Dominion is the third installment in the reboot series that began with Jurassic World 2015. Started running more than a decade after the original trilogy ended in 2001, the new characters the film revolves around have already begun. most controversial and worst of all, forgettable.

Lots of Jurassic Park: Dominion's marketing relies on a somewhat grueling choice to bring the old cast back to their iconic roles. Sam Neill as Alan Grant, Laura Dern as Dr Ellie Sattler and Jeff Goldblum as Dr Ian Malcom will return to the franchise for the new film.

Of course, Goldblum has been in the Fallen Kingdom for about 5 minutes, but he seems to play a bigger role here. Neill, Dern, and Goldblum are all incredible actors with countless stellar roles, but as the media franchise becomes more dominant, they'll be pulled back into their biggest roles. me. Bringing back a classic cast can be seen in a variety of ways. Whether it's an opportunity for a fan-favorite character to develop or a skeptical attempt to profit from name recognition, it's a franchise tactic that's going nowhere. But, accidentally or not, it doesn't reflect too well on the franchise's new characters.

The Jurassic World series focuses on Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing and Chris Pratt as Owen Grady, but most people who have seen the film won't remember their names. Both characters are hopelessly generic. Claire is the commercial director of Jurassic World theme park and the driving force behind the birth of Indominus Rex. She is ambitious and callous at first, but as her park begins to go down significantly, she works to save everyone. By the second movie, she had completely changed and became a dedicated fighter for the rights of dinosaurs. Claire isn't a particularly interesting character, but she's basically better written than her love interest.

Owen Grady is exactly the kind of simple comedian that people aim to criticize when they mock Chris Pratt. He is a professional “animal behaviorist” who earns that title by literally training a pack of Velociraptors. He rides a motorcycle, leads armed squads in hand-to-hand combat, he usually wields a gun. He's like an imitation of superhero characters in other movies, played with absolute precision.

Of course, he's the only one who seems to understand dinosaurs and the rudimentary physics and magnetism of the animals clearly help the human characters get through anything. Grady doesn't have much of an emotional side. He likes beer, motorbikes and dinosaurs and that's all the audience knows about him. With a pair of boring, generic, or silly protagonists leading the series, it would certainly be nice to have some other beloved character the plot could revolve around.

Jurassic Park is a series about dinosaurs, but those gorgeous creatures have almost no personality to be considered characters. With the exception of Blue, Grady's favorite carnivore, most of the dinosaurs just run, scream, and attack. Of course, the human characters mostly do those things too, but they also occasionally convey their emotions through dialogue. Obviously, no one is arguing that dinosaurs should talk or movies should have subtitles. They are animals, tons of movies include animals in their main cast and convey their personalities through more creative methods. In fact, the kaiju monster franchise has been giving personality to nonverbal characters for decades. The original Kaiju who popularized the genre achieved this feat, even in his modern American incarnation.

The Monsterverse series features many human actors, who rarely overstate the actual story. The main characters are Godzilla, King Kong, and their various allies and enemies. Perhaps the best part of Godzilla: King of the Monsters is how the series is able to convey personalities and intentions among kaiju. Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah all have identifiable traits. Ghidorah even has three distinct consciousnesses, each with a different personality. Godzilla is fierce and unpredictable but always finds a way to defeat other dangerous monsters. Ghidorah is a proud and regal king who always finds a way to spend
