Deshaun Watson Still a Name to Monitor for Vikings

In theory, Watson could be exonerated — just like former Minnesota Vikings cornerback Jeff Gladney was on Thursday. In the spring of 2021, Gladney was accused of battery involving his girlfriend in Texas but was found not guilty after a quick deliberation by a Texas jury.
And because the Vikings and current QB1 Kirk Cousins may not find common ground on a new contract, he could be traded this month. Wouldn't you know it, Watson has made it clear for about a year he wants out of Houston — even before his legal woes began.
Darren Wolfson from KSTP approved on Thursday the Vikings interest in Watson, pending legal resolution, by some voices in the room at TCO Performance Center, the Vikings headquarters.
Indeed, a lot of diligence would be needed — plus gobs of draft capital — to land Watson with the Vikings. However, if Watson settles with the accusations or beats the criminal charges, he is going to play football somewhere, whether fans like it or not. While the charges against him are heinous, men and women exonerated by the legal system are afforded second chances in America. That's how it goes. A complete reputational facelift is typically required. But if Michael Vick and Ray Lewis can do it, others can, too.
On the whole, Watson joining the Vikings seems like an odd fit as Minnesota’s ownership leans heavily on “character guys,” erasing many of the ills of the mid-2000s when the Vikings were constantly beset by players’ legal maladies. For Watson to become a Viking, a nearly full exculpation would probably be mandatory.
Watson is 26, so if he makes it out of this legal situation somewhat unscathed, he has a decade-plus of football left. And perhaps his trade price tag won't be as colossal with the meaningful shenanigans attached to his resume.
The bottom line: the Vikings could be trading their quarterback, Watson wants out of Houston, his legal resolution is semi-close to fruition, at least some members of the Vikings inner circle are interested in Watson per Wolfson, and 'tis the season for the quarterback trade carousel.
